BRABAZON HOUSE, SWINFORD, Co MAYO

BRABAZON HOUSE,  SWINFORD, Co MAYO – ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE BRABAZONS OF BRABAZON PARK
Built by George Brabazon in the 1770s, this picture shows his son Sir Anthony with some members of the family.  The house was vacated by Gen John Brabazon in the late 1800s and later used as an agricultural college for young ladies.  It was demolished in the 1980s.

    1. Hi, Mel - it was one William Palmer, who used to travel around the Big Houses painting the owners in situ. The picture shows Sir Anthony on horseback, can't be bothered to turn for the artist, a statement of power, and Lady Brabazon at the top of the steps touching the House with keys in hand. Palmer had to wait for his money so he painted Mrs Brabazon #1 at the bottom of the steps - a scandal even in Georgian times. The lady in the middle is probably Catherine (married to Hugh Higgins), Sir A's sister. Michael Brabazon

  4. The 1978 photograph was taken by me in that year and Michael Brabazon was granted permission from me to post it. Judge John J. Curry, Chicago, IL, USA
